Olympic and Global Events — Modules One and Two

Modules one and two provide students with a comprehensive knowledge of the Olympic Movement, the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and other global sport mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup, including Qatar 2022 and the Saudi Arabia 2034 bid, the 2019 Special Olympics World Games, and more. The course allows students to understand and critically analyze topics such as Olympic and international sport governance structures, bidding on and hosting sport mega-events, the perspectives of stakeholders such as athletes, parents, coaches, media, and sponsors, the concepts of legacy and sustainability, and the social and environmental consequences of these mega-events.

Sports Leadership — Modules Three and Four

Modules three and four are focused on the role of leadership in sports organizations. The course reviews contemporary leadership theories, models, and styles as applied to sports. There is an emphasis on leadership in the context of social systems, such as servant leadership, distributed leadership, transformational leadership, and global leadership.

We will explore leadership in the context of a functioning culture within an organization, and the formation of effective strategies and techniques in the workplace. Additionally, students will be exposed to current and emerging trends in the sports industry, including how they have contributed to rapid growth in the sporting landscape in the Middle East, and will be called upon to utilize critical thinking and analytical skills to understand, evaluate, and analyze leading executives and current and emerging trends in the sports industry. Attention is given to developing knowledge about accomplishing results through people, leading change, and ethical behavior. Students will have the opportunity to reflect and refine their personal leadership insight and skills to advance their leadership profile.

The development of the Global Sports Leadership Certificate in Abu Dhabi supports the strategic objectives of the Emirate and the implementation of its long-term strategy for sport. The opportunity to increase the quantity and quality of local leaders in public and private sport is paramount to growing sports participation in education and the community. This will in turn increase the number of events which deliver a local impact and support the growth of the athlete talent pool.
